Distinguished and Famous people from East Melbourne

🌿 Edna Walling

Edna Walling’s eastern Melbourne legacy includes Bickleigh Vale at Mooroolbark, a village landscape she began developing around her own home in the 1920s. Gardens, cottages and trees formed a shared environment rather than isolated house blocks. Walling lived there through much of her working life, moving from Sonning to The Barn before leaving for Queensland in 1967. A nursery and studio were part of the same creative setting. The village makes her landscape ideas unusually tangible: a garden designer’s home became a larger experiment in how neighbours might live among plants.

🎵 Dame Nellie Melba

Nellie Melba’s family life linked her with Lilydale before her international operatic fame. Later she bought land at nearby Coldstream and commissioned John Grainger to build Coombe Cottage. The house provided an Australian base within a career spent travelling between major stages. Her father David Mitchell’s business interests also connected the family with the district. These eastern Melbourne associations sit alongside her Richmond birthplace and overseas achievements. They show the importance of a home landscape to a performer whose public name and professional life were recognised far beyond Victoria.

📚 Bill Daniel

Bill Daniel lectured at Catholic Theological College in East Melbourne during his wider career in Melbourne theological education. His writing connected Catholic moral thought with contemporary scholarship and debated questions of social justice, war and medical ethics. He was also interested in Aboriginal land rights and served on the Federal government’s Uranium Advisory Council. A reserved and demanding teacher, he encouraged students to examine different sides of a question. East Melbourne’s association is the college where he lectured during his long teaching career.
